I had this problem with Google Chrome. It uses the local domain google.com.eg, when I type a search query in the address bar instead of the desired google.com.
I tried to change that in the options but had no success.
So, here is how to do this in Windows 7

- Close Chrome
- Go to C:\ Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data
- Open the "Local State" file in Notepad or any text editor
- search for google.xx, where the .xx is the local domain (You will find two instances) of it and replace it with .com
- Save the changes and reopen Chrome and it should work.
